At Home Practice

 

 

To learn to swing the ball from the shoulder:

 

1.       Take a empty milk jug (gallon for older kids, half gallon for younger kids)

2.       Wash it out and fill with water and securely replace the lid

3.       Stand in front of a full length mirror holding the jug by the handle

4.       Start with jug at your side and swing back and forth, next to you side, from the shoulder in a relaxed manner.

 

Watch in the mirror to be sure you are swinging it straight

 

 

At Home Practice

 

 

To learn to roll the ball over a mark (arrows on the lane):

 

1.       Take an old sheet or large towel

2.       Place a piece of contrasting color tape on the sheet or towel

3.       You will need to place cushions against the wall or have someone to catch and roll the ball back to you

4.       Stand about one step from the tape with the tape straight in front of your bowling shoulder

5.       If you bowl with your right hand bend the knees with your left leg in front and your right leg behind (switch if you bowl with your left hand)

6.       Take your bowling ball, if you have one, or another type of ball and roll it over the tape

7.       After rolling over the tape three times in a row take one step backwards and do it again

Keep taking one step backwards every time you roll the ball over the tape three times in  a row and repeat

 

At Home Practice

 

 

To learn the four step approach:             

                                                                    

To begin:                                                                                 

1.       Stand in front of a full length mirror several steps back

2.       If you bowl with your right hand your right foot should be just behind and to the side of the left foot

3.       Take your first step on your right foot

4.       Take four steps (you will end on your left foot)

5.       If you bowl with your left hand your left foot should be just behind and to the side of the right foot

6.       Take your first step on your left foot

Take four steps (you will end on your right foot)

 

Add the arm swing:

(Do not use a ball at this point.  After several times you can add a milk jug,    but do not release it.)

1.       When you take your first step move your arm forward and down

2.       At the end of the first step your ball should be to the front of your right leg if right handed.  Left leg if left handed.

3.       Take your second step, start moving the ball down and back toward the back swing

4.       At the end of the second step your ball should be either beside your leg for just behind it above the calf.

5.       Take your third step, your ball should be at the top of your back swing

Take your fourth step (and slide) your ball should come through and be released at the bottom of the forward swing and be released just as it starts its upward motion.

 

Add the mark:

Use your bowling ball or another ball having someone to catch it and roll it back.

Follow the instructions for ‘Learning to bowl over a mark’ only take four steps and release the ball (slowly and gently) allowing it to roll over the tape.
