John J. CALDWELL

Asley Note:
The following was written by Rev. D. Harding Caldwell concerning John J.
Caldwell: "While reflecting on the history of Catawba County, one cannot escape the area in Caldwell Township that is widely known as the Balls Creek Community. For many years one segment of this community has been known as "Scraper Town." This name came into being because of the prominent use of the name John. My Grandfather's name was John J. Caldwell, and due to the fact that there were so many people named John living in the area, each one was distinguished by a nickname that was either a personal or an occupational characteristic of the individual. My Grandfather and two of his sons, Joseph and Marion, were at one time engaged in making barrel hoops for home use as well as for the public. The making of hoops by hand required a great deal of scraping, and therefore my Grandfather received his distinguished title and was known as John "Scraper." In this same area, his parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents had lived. They made their many footprints in the sands of time. 'As Father Time marches on, ninth generation children of our Pioneer, James Caldwell, are now evident in this same community, making their footprints in the sands of time".
