Arrived after 1839, left after 1844 (using census record birth locations for children)

AR 1844- 1853 (or later to 1869)
Arrived in Arkansas after about 1844 and before about 1847 (using census record birth locations for children) Assumed son William from 1870 Bell Co., TX census indicates birth in AR abt. 1853.  Biography below indicates relocation to Texas about 1860.

TX 1853 (or later to abt 1870) - death
Ransom appears in Bell Co., Tx census in 1870.  The identity of Angeline and Ruth is not confirmed, but it is certainly possible the girls are Ransom's daughters (with wife Sarah, who died sometime after 1869).  Their birth dates are abt 1853 and 1856, respectively, both born in TX. If these are his daughters, that would set his arrival in Texas to about 1853 (after William was born and before Angeline was born). Ransom's son Alvis had his first child in TX in 1869.  It would be likely that Alvis moved to TX with his parents. If these are his daughters, that would put his arrival in TX at about 1853.

Samuel Ransom was born to Alvis and Cornelia Lockhart on November 1, 1869 at Williamson County, Texas.  Samuel was their second child, the first being Sarah, (1868).  Cornelia by her previous marriage to Thadeus E. Allen, (killed in the Confederate Army), had two children, Josephine (1861 - 1931), and Thadeus ( 1862 - 1954).

According to the 1880 census Alvis and Cornelia moved into the house with Alvis' father, Ransom Lockhart.  (ACTUALLY, THE CENSUS REPORTS THAT THEY LIVED NEXT DOOR.) They lived near the Grove, Bell County, Texas.  Twins, Ellen (1876 - 1963) and Virginia (1876 - 1945) were born to Alvis and Cornelia.

Ransom (1812? -) and his wife Sarah (1814 - 187?), born in Tennessee lived in Missouri and Arkansas before coming to Texas about 1860.  Alvis attended school in Jasper, Crawford County, Arkansas. He became a firm believer in education.  Samuel Lockhart followed his father Alvis' beliefs.  Education was Samuel's career.  He studied medicine but because of his health could not pursue that career.  Samuel mastered seven languages and taught them to others.  After traveling throughout Texas and Mexico, Samuel returned home to marry Mollie Cochran on October 10, 1905.  The story passed down through the family was that Samuel and Mollie were going to the preacher's home when they met Rev. H. W. Dunn. He married them sitting in the buggy.

Samuel and Mollie lived on the Flat Seattle Road.  Samuel taught school at Flat.  while living in Coryell County. Katherine (1906), Alvis (1907), Abigail (1910) and Roy (1912) were born to Samuel and Mollie. Mollie had an extra special love for animals and growing things which Samuel shared.  One of his studies was botany in 1915.  Samuel heard about fruit being grown in East Texas and moved to MT. Sylvan, Texas.  While teaching there Samuel planted cotton, fruit trees and grape vines.

In 1919 Samuel and Mollie had their last child, Oliver. Samuel died July 14, 1927 at age 57 - a short life, but one that touched many.  Mollie died April 2, 1976.  Their five children still live in Smith County, Texas.  Some of Mr. Samuel Lockhart's dreams live on. Roy and his son, James have a plant nursery.  Asa Lockhart, a grandson, is a medical doctor.  Jimmy Rozell, a great grandson, is a botanist.

In 1982 Alvis, Samuel's son, gave Ray and Sybil Gilleland cuttings from the grapevines.  Sybil, Katherine's daughter, made jelly from Grandpa Sam's grapes this year.  It has been fun for Sybil and me to get to know Grandpa Lockhart.
Written by Judy Gilleland.

On page 5 a Maxine Heyroth Lockhart (Mrs. Guy) is listed as a volunteer to the Area Representatives for the History Book Committee.

On page 422 Tacka Millsap married a Lockhart.  Not further info on the Lockhart.

On page 466 a Rhoda Melissa Pendleton married a Alfred Arnold Lockhart. No further info on the Lockhart.

My ggrandfather was Andrew Jackson Lockhart; born in TN 8 May 1827 according to family records. He may be the same Andrew J. Lockhart who married Mrs. Gill in 1890--the age is correct, and the 1900 Census lists him as living with his son's family (W. M. Lockhart, who was my grandfather) and having been married ten years but with no wife's name listed. His previous wife (my ggrandmother) was Sarah Howard, b21 Mar 1827 in MO, d28 Feb 1883 in Crawford County AR. They were married about 1853, according to our records. I'll be happy to share whatever other information we have. Sincerely, Andy Lockhart

1) Don't have any information on Sarah's death date or place; 1900 Census lists Andrew as living with son W.M.Lockhart, married 10 years but no wife's name given. (W.M. is actually William Dickson Lockhart, 1854-1934, my grandfather)
2) Also don't have any tribal information; family lore says Andrew was married to a Cherokee but her name was reputedly Amanda Christie from Georgia--no documentation has been found that we know of.
3) At this point I don't know anyone who has Census records except the Van Buren Public Library, where they are on microfilm. Don't know anything about Van Buren County records, and I've never been either to Clinton or to Heber Springs--it's a small county with two county seats.
4) Would like to know a bit more about Sarah--I found the record of her marriage to Benjamin Carter, 1880, in the big books at Crawford County Court House, but have nothing else except the record of her marriage to Andrew in 1890.
Thank you - I hope this is helpful, Andy

In my posting earlier, I got my generations mixed. Instead of being reputedly married to Amanda Christie, Andrew Jackson Lockhart 1827-1909 was reputedly the SON of Amanda Christie and Jesse Lockhart.
I'll be happy to send a Descendant report for Andrew Jackson Lockhart, if you'll give me an email address. Thanks, Andy
