Goodson, Lockhart and Allied Families

Notes

Richard , 7 TILGHMAN

From Stephen Tillman:
7. RICHARD TILGHMAN, son of William (6) Tilghman, is shown in the "Visitation of Kent" as living at Holloway Court, Snodland Parish, Kent County, during the time of King Henry, the 4th (1399-1413), and that he was the father of Thomas, and William.

The "Maryland Historical Magazine," June, 1905, states that this Richard Tilghman was living 1450 at Holloway Court and that his wife was Dionysia --, surname not given, and that he was the father of: Thomas, and William, died 1493-94, and who married Margaret Saunders. The "Visitation of Kent" indicates that William Tilghman was of Faversham Parish. It may be that Richard Tilghman married Dionysia Holloway.

Thomas , 8 TILGHMAN

8. THOMAS TILGHMAN, son of Richard (7) and Dionysia Tilghman, according to the "Visitation of Kent," was of Snodland Parish, and that he was the father of William, who married Emmau Avery, the daughter of Thomas Avery. The "Maryland Historical Magazine" states that Thomas Tilghman married Joan --, surname not given (was it Joan Newman?) and that he was the father of William, John, and Ralph.

The "Maryland Historical Magazine" states that William Tilghman, the son of Thomas Tilghman, died about 1493 and that his will, dated September 15, 1493 and proved 1494, left a bequest for the masses for the souls of the deceased parents Richard and Dionysia Tilghman. In addition the Compiler of the Tilghman Family record has been informed that this will mentions three nephews as William, John, and Ralph.

(Note: Above references indicate that this William is the son of Ricahrd Tilghman [7] and Dionysia, not Thomas Tilgman [8].)

Johannes , 1 TILGHMAN

ORIGIN OF THE TILGHMAN FAMILY, Stephen F. Tillman

1. The name of Tilghman (Tillman) is derived from the occupation of its first bearers, either as "tilemen,"--the "tiler" being one who covered roofs with tiles,--or as "tillman," that is, as husbandmen or farmers. The family motto of "Spes Alit Agricolam" (Hope Flies With the Farmer) would indicate the latter origin. The family name is found on ancient English records in the various forms of Tyleman, Tylman, Tyllman, Tylghman, Tyllghman, Tileman, Tilman, Tilemon, Tilmon, Tillmon, Tillman, and Tilghman, although in early Germanic records it is spelled consistently as either Tilghman or Tillmann. Such changes in the spelling, resulting from ignorance of spelling on the part of early clerks, variations in pronunciations, or merely from the preference of the bearer, tend to baffle both the genealogist and the etymologist. For example, the marriage license issued to Oswald Tilghman of London, read "Tilghman" for the first marriage and as "Tilman" for the second marriage.

At least it is known that "Tilman or Tilghman, the thaneman," was in County Kent, England, as early as 690 A.D. In view of the prominent and active part that the family has played in Colonial America and pioneer American, it is only reasonable to assume that they were just as active in England, although no record of this activity has been found.

Insofar as the connected genealogy of the family recorded in this book is concerned, the period preceding 1225 will have to be passed over for lack of factual records, but it must again be emphasized that all English records speak of the Tilghman family as "an ancient family of Snodland" (History of County Kent by Harris: The History of County Kent by Hasted: County Genealogies by Berry: Surnames of the United Kingdom by Harrison: and the Visitation of Kent, in its several volumes). The records show that JOHANNES TILGHMAN, lived in County Kent, and that he had one son, Richardus. Spacing back from Richard Tilghman (7) born about 1400, at intervals of 25 years per generation, it is assumed that Johannes Tilghman was born about 1225 or earlier.

These records show that the Tilghmans lived in Snodland Parish, and also in Faversham Parish, each of which is in County Kent. The family were the owners of Holloway Court in Snodland and several courts in Faversham. Philipott, in his "Villare Cantiancum," states that he has examined all of the records very carefully and has reached the conclusion that the Tilghman family came into the possession of Holloway Court in the reign of King Edward, the 3d (between 1313 and 1377)." Other records in referring to the Tilghman family of Faversham refer to the family as being a younger branch of the Tilghmans of Snodland Parish.

In the "History of Kent," it is stated that "Henry de Holeweye paid aid for Holeweye Court in the beginning of the reign of King Henry, the 3d. His descendant, William de Holeweye possessed it in the 30th year of King Edward, the 1st, from which name it passed into that of Tilghman, who were owners of it in the reign of King Edward, the 3d, and that Richard Tilghman had his arms painted in very old glass in the windows of the house." Holloway Court passed out of the Tilghman family in the time of Edward Tilghman. It is believed that the Richard Tilghman just mentioned herein is Richard (2) rather than Richard (7) as given by some historians.
