Roots of Rudd note: William AARON amd Rebecca RUDD, dated 3 November 1829, Franklin County, Georgia

Concerning William Aaron marriage to Nancy Hawkins and Sarah Rebecca Goodson:

Roots of Rudd reports that Nancy Ann Hawkins was married to Aldridge Rudd and  William Aaron, and that Sarah Rebecca Goodson was married to William Rudd (Aldridge's son) and William Aaron.  This would mean that Sarah was married to her mother-in-laws second (or possibly first) husband.
Nancy was born about 1758 and died 1829. Nancy married Aldridge Rudd in 1779 at age 21.  Aldridge died in 1804.  No date is provide for Nancy's marriage to Aaron.  It is listed as her second marriage.  Nancy would have been at least 46-years-old when she remarried to W. Aaron.
For William Aaron, however, his first marriage is reported as that to Sarah Rebecca in 1829, and second marriage to Nancy Hawkins.  This could not be correct, however, as Nancy died in 1829.  It would appear he remarried to Sarah in 1829 after Nancy died. marriage may have been placed as second because it was not primary and becuase of lack of information.
Nancy was married to Aldrige from 1779-1804. To have been married to her, William would have had to married her before 1779, in which case they divorced, or after 1804 when Aldrige died.  Assuming he was at least 18 when he married, to marry Nancy before 1779, William would have to have been born about 1758, to marry her after 1804, he would have to have been born sometime before 1782.
If he married Nancy before 1779 (and thus was born about 1758), divorced then married Sarah in 1829, he would be about 71-years-old, and Sarah was 40.  If he married Nancy after 1804 (and thus was born sometime before 1782), he would have to be at least 18-years old and Nancy would be at least 42.  The tendency is to consider he was older than 18 if he married Nancy (after 1804) who was 42, but the problem then reverses creating a larger and larger gap in the age difference between William and Sarah when they marry.
There are several William Aarons in GA during this time, including a William Aaron, Sr. in Franklin Co., in 1818-19 tax lists. The suffix Sr. indicates he had a son by the same name.  It will be difficult to determine with certainty which William Aaron Sarah married in 1829. It would seem reasonable to assume that Nancy married an older W. Aaron (Sr.?) and Nancy married his son or other relation; that they did not marry the same man. (Remember, while William would not have been Sarah's father-in-law, he would have been her mother-in-law's husband.)
That said, the 1830 Franklin Co., census shows the following: (State: Georgia Year: 1830, County: Franklin Roll:  M19_17, Township: Unknown Townships Page:  257 Image: 521), William Aaron, 1 male under 5, 1 male 10-15,  male 70-80, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 40-50.
The 1830 record could possibily support the cenario above that the couple had a 30 year difference in age, however, we do not know if the female is, in fact, Sarah.  The woman could be some other relative, or it could be Sarah living in the household as William's daughter-in-law.  sarah's know minor children at the time would have been 2 males, ages about 9 and about 5, which would fit this record.
1840 census records report the following: William Aaron in Franklin Co., male age 20-30, female age 30-40; William Aaron in Franklin Co., male age 20-30, male age 90-100, female age 20-30; William Aaron, 1840,  Franklin Co., Township: Age 93 No Twnshp Listed Page: 145, Database: GA 1840 Pensioners List.  Since this last entry is from the Pensioners list, it is likely referencing the 90-100 male in the W. Aaron houshold listed above.  There are also William Aarons in Jasper and Madison Counties.

Also - It is interesting to note that in the estate records of Caswell County, North Carolina, April Court 1829, Nancy Hawkings is addressed as "Nancy Rudd, deceased," indicating she did not take the last name 'Aaron.' It seems unlikely that in those days a woman would not take her husband's name, or revert back to a previous married name after his death.  This might raise the question of mistaken identity on the part of Ann "Nancy" Hawkings.  There may, in fact be two separte individuals: Ann Hawkings and Nancy Hawkings - not an uncommon error when trying to locate and identy children. Questions should also be asked about the sited marriage record of William Aaron an Rebecca Rudd.  This may not be Sarah Rebecca Goodson Rudd.
At this time (Feb. 2003), I do not record William, husband of Nancy and William, husband of Sarah as the same individual,  though further investigation may certainly change that.
