Hi, Heath -
Here's what I have found. Mrs. A. L. McMeans was born 15 Feb 1851 and died 11 June 1907 (per tombstone).

Dwelling #134,1900 Caldwell County Census has Lu McMeans born Feb 1851, age 49, married 24 years, b. MS, FA b. MS, MO. b. MS

Her husband was listed as J. McMeans, born Dec 1850, TN, age 49, married 24 years, b. AL. FA b. SC, MO b. TNM, Farm labor, renting house.

9 Children, 6 living, all born TX.
Wm. J., son, Feb. 1878, age 22, single
Rosa, daughter, Oct. 1882, age 16, single
George, son, Oct 1888, age 11, single, farm labor
Clarence, son Oct 1891, age 8, single (cannot read, cannot write, can speak English)
Odon(?) D., sn, May 1880, age 20, single, farm labor
Lucille, dau, May 1876, age 24, single

The other stone is for W. T. McMeans. It shows he was born 27 April 1878, died 2 Dec. 1906. He may have been the Wm. J, son of J. and Lu McMeans, listed on the 1900 Caldwell Co. Census. Age is about right, but date is not consistent. It is not unusual, however, for the gravestone and the census to have different data. If this is not who he was, I have no idea who he was. He was one of the last burials in this cemetery.

I have about 75 names I am currently researching for this cemetery restoration project. If you run onto anything that may help me, I'd very much appreciate hearing from you.

The 1900 Caldwell Co. TX Census lists a McMeans family in dwelling #134. Lu was born Feb. 1851, age 49, married 24 years, 9 children, 6 living. Husband J. McMeans, born Dec 1850, TN, Farm Labor, Renting House. Father b. SC, mo. born TN. All children born TX. Six living: Wm J., Rosa, George, Clarence, Odon D., Lucille.

Suspect "Lu" is Ms. A. L. McMeans and was named Lucille.
Discrepancy between son Wm. J. above and the W. T. buried this cemetery. Both born 1878 - W. J. in Feb. and W. T. in April. No clue as to who the three deceased children may have been.

Alice L. PAGE

Alice was killed when a tree fell on her.

Lucille MCMEANS

This may be twin to Luther, and census birth date is incorrect. There is a question as to whether the couple had 9 or 10 children.

William T. MCMEANS

Births dates reported as 2/1878 and 4/27/1878.

I am looking for the parents of my great grand parents. Marvin Russell Stocking was born in Harris Co. Oct 18, 1871. I have 2 names as a possibility of his father, one is John R (possibly Russell) and also an H. E. If anyone has any knowledge of these names and can make a connection I would appreciate your help. Marvin married Sallie Annie (Sarah Ann Walker). She was born Feb 8, 1870 in Cass Co., TX and they were married Aug 20, 1891 in Belcherville, Montague Co., TX.

Yes this is part of my family. Marvin Russell is a descendant of John and is my ggrandfather. I don't have all of the descendants of Marvin. In fact, his granddaughter tells me that his mother died when the kids were young and someone else raised him. The confusion is in who the parents were and who raised the kids. His mother was Cherokee. I have two sets of possibilities. H. E Stocking and Loretta Gary are listed on Marvin's death cert, but can't find anything on either one of these to prove or disprove parentage. I have a John Stocking and Henrietta Penson that shows the kids with them in the 1880 census. If you can help me prove the parentage I would sure appreciate it. I also don't have all the descendants so anything you have I would appreciate.

GARY, STOCKING 1860's/1870's Harris Co. TX
Author: Amy Dyer  Date: 18 Jul 2002 1:56 PM GMT
  Surnames: GARY, STOCKING, PENSON
The 1870 Harris Co. census for Cedar Bayou, p. 493b, family #72/69 shows John Stocking, age 17, with a female named Isaac Stocking, age 18, and a 3 mo. old baby, Mary Jane Stocking. We believe Mary Jane was our g-g-aunt, b. June 1870. We'd like to know who John and "Isaac" were. Were they her parents?
Mary Jane had a brother, Marvin Russell Stocking, b. in 1871, and supposedly their mother died shortly after that. Their father may have left them with relatives to be raised.
Some sources say Mary Jane's and Marvin's mother was Loretta Garry/Gary. The family living next door to John and "Isaac" in 1870 was the Isaac H. Gary family, who later moved to Karnes Co. How was she connected to this family?
Another source says the mother was Henrietta Penson. Any clues would be appreciated.

I am looking for the parents of Marvin Russel STOCKING. He was born 18 Oct. 1871. His mother died shortly after the birth of the youngest child and someone else raised the children. I have several names, but I need to know who were the actual natural parents and who the people who raised the kids were. If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.....

GARY/GARRY and STOCKING, 1870-71
Author: Amy Dyer  Date: 15 Jul 2002 7:54 PM GMT
  Surnames: GARY / GARRY, STOCKING
Trying to find Loretta Garry or Gary, m. H. E. Stocking before 1870. Had two children, Mary Jane "Mittie" Stocking b. June 26, 1870, and Marvin Russell Stocking b. October 18, 1871 in Harrison Co., TX, just north of Panola Co. Loretta may have died shortly after Marvin's birth, and their father left them to be raised by relatives. Marvin and Mittie married Sallie Annie Walker and Alonzo Johnson Walker on the same day in 1891 in Montague Co., TX. Family legend says Loretta was Cherokee. Was she connected to the Gary families in Panola? Any clues would be appreciated greatly!

Stocking, Edward A. & Margaret Rhea

Looking for further information about Edward A. STOCKING and Margaret RHEA, and their son H. E. STOCKING. FamilySearch (LDS) says H. E. was born 1852 in Coldspring, San Jacinto Co., TX, as well as a brother Henry Beard STOCKING b. 1850. I know that San Jacinto Co. wasn't formed until 1870, so probably the birthplaces aren't correct, but at least it would be a starting place. H. E. STOCKING is possibly the father of Mary Jane "Mittie" STOCKING, b. 1870, and Marvin Russell STOCKING, b. 1871 in Harris or Harrison Co., TX. Their mother is said to have been Loretta GARRY. The family says Loretta was Cherokee, and that she died shortly after Marvin's birth, and H. E. left the children to be raised by relatives. Marvin and Mittie were in Montague Co., TX by 1891, when they were both married. Any clues would be appreciated!

Found a "L. A. Stocking" listed on the Liberty Co. Confederate Indigent Families Index for 1863-65, and a Stocking family listed on p. 349B of the 1850 census index of Liberty Co. Trying to match them to H. E. Stocking and Loretta Garry, parents of Marvin Russell Stocking and Mary Jane Stocking, both born about 1870/71 in either Harris or Harrison Co. Does anyone know more about these persons?
