John McMeans was born in 1811 in SC and died in 1896 in Stockdale, Wilson Co., TX. He is buried in STockdale City Cem. John P McMeans was my g-g-grandfather. He had 2 wives and I am descended from the 2nd on Nancy Jane Jones d/o Seaborn Lisbon and Catherine Long Jones. They were neighbors in Talladega Co., AL back in the 1830s though the 1840s. About 1855 John and Nancy moved to TX to Cherokee Co.,TX. Nancy died there sometime in the 1890s, exact time or place of burial is unknown. I would love to talk to you about this family and see your pictures. Who were Alice McMean's parents? I suspect that her father was one of the sons of John and Nancy. There were four of them. Please let me hear from you. My e-mail is jgblack@viptx.com. Jean Black

Catherine LONG

Other sources give Catherine's birth state as TN and OH. In the 1850 Talladega Co., AL Census birth state is listed as VA.

Jean,
The Thomas Boyd Foster book of 1893 did not know all of his aunt Catherine Foster Long's children. They left Tennessee about 60 years before he wrote his family history. He apparently depended on his memory and correspondence with family members who could or would tell him what they remembered. Since Catherine died when the author was 1 year old, he never knew her personally. Anyway, it's not surprising that his data on her family was incomplete. What is there obviously matches our family.

When I found the Bible record, there she was. Since there was no other daughter named for Catherine Foster Long, I was not surprised that she belonged, but had found no previous evidence. The Bible pages say, "Caty Long married to Seabourn Jones July 13th A D 1820". They also give her birth date as, "Caty Long Junr May 18th A D 1803". I have no doubt that your Caty Long Jones was the third daughter of Joseph Long and Catherine Foster.

Catherine married Seaborn Lisbon Jones 13 July 1820, probably in Bedford County. They appear to be in the 1830 census of Bedford County. The 1850 census of Talladega Co., Alabama, includes Caty, Seabourn and five children still at home. Some were already in Texas. Catherine is buried in the Coker cemetery in San Antonio.

The children of this family were (Source - letter written by grandson Harrison Jones listed children, not spouses):
   1. Tacy Jones 1820 - 1899 m Shadrick Jones Moore
   2. William L. Jones 1822 - ? m Harriet Coker, Melvina Camk
   3. Joseph F. Jones 1824 - bef 1870 m Nancy M. Shockley
   4. Amos Dickens Jones 1827 - 1906 m Jane Maria Coker     5. Nancy Jones 1830 - ? m John Paschal McMeans
   6. Wiley Jones 1832? - ?? no data other than Harrison Jones letter
   7. Rebecca Jones 1833 - 1917 m John Wesley Goodwin
   8. Margaret Jones abt 1835 - ?? no data other than Harrison Jones letter
   9. Seaborn Wesley Jones 1839 - 1901 m 1-Eulalie Salle, 2-Sarah Ager
   10. Jasper Newton Jones abt 1842 - died in Civil War per Harrison Jones letter

Research on this branch of the family has been done by Bob Battaglia of San Antonio, Texas.

Jim & Gene: Thanks for the responses, but none of them fit my Wiley Jones. He was probably b. TN or AL. He is supposedly son of Seaborn and Catherine JONES who are shown in 1850 Talladega census - Wiley was not listed with the other children. Part of the Jones line went through Cherokee Co TX which is next door to Rusk, so there was a chance he was in Rusk. Jim, my apology to you since I see you responded back in Jan - somehow it got by me.

"My grandfather, Jesse Porter, named for two uncles, was born February 11, 1838.  When young, he married Levisa Lee, who died possibly at childbirth.  He left Missouri and came to Cherokee County, Texas in 1857, joining two uncles already here.  In 1861 he married a widow, Nancy Almira Salmon Bishop, who had a daughter who married grandpa's brother, Jasper, in 1872.  There were born to my Grandparents Aunt Caladona, who married Jesse Evans; Aunt Ruth, who married Joe McMeans; Aunt Bertie, who married Paschal McMeans; Aunt Annie, who married W. W. Young; my father, Robert Wiley, named for two uncles, born March 13, 1865.

Jesse Porter CORNELISON

From source:
Jesse Porter Cornelison (John6, Jesse E.5, Johathan4, Cornelius3, Garrett2, Conrad1) was born February 11, 1838 in Barry County, Missouri.  He married (1) Levisa Lee.    He married (2) Mary (Cornelison).  She was born Abt. 1839 in Missouri.  He married (3) Nancy Almira Salmon Bishop.

THE CHEROKEE COUNTY HISTORY (First Edition) Published by the Cherokee County Historical Commission, Post Box 1128; Jacksonville, Texas 75766; Copyright 1986; page 217-218; THE CORNELISON FAMILY (exerts)

Grandpa Jesse served four years in the War Between the States.  He was a farmer and owned a cotton gin.  He lived in a house on Dad's property in Stockdale.  He was a good man, a good-looking man, and when I teased him about being good looking he would always say, "The gals all said I was."  Many things he told me were true, and I loved to sit on his lap as he told me stories.  He always wore a long coat, and in his coat pocket was his New Testament, which he read often, and a little silver comb he allowed me to use to comb his hair and beard.  He didn't drink and I never heard him swear, and neither did he smoke.  He was an old time Democrat and a member of the Church of Christ.  He died November 5, 1928, and is buried in the Griffin Cemetery."

(MY NOTE: Question as to children's mother.  Cornelison report shows mother as Levina Lee, but subsequent birth dates as well as additional marriage dates dispute that.  Until verified, will use Nancy, as report indicates marriage in 1861, and children's birth dates begin in 1862.)
