Notes

John MOSELEY Capt.

[moseley1.ged]

Princess Anne DB4: 541 John gave his age as about 64 on 18 May 1734.
Adventurers of Purse and Person 1607-1625, 3rd ed. 1987 revised and edited by
Virginia M. Meyer and John Frederick Dorman, p. 319: "41. Capt. John4, of age
by 4 Jan 1692/3, Vestryman of Lynnhaven Parish, owned 325 acres in Princess
Anne County, 1704, left will 15 April 1739 - 2 July 1740, ..."
Possibly two different wives: Elizabeth and the widow of William
Axtell/Ashwell The ambiguous phrase "Elizabeth now the wife of John Moseley"
is in Norfolk Co. Va. Deed Bk 5: 216  mar 30, 1693/4 when John in apparently
his first adult deed divided grandfather John Gookin's 640 acres with his
brother Wm Moseley.
OTHER WIFE?: Princess Anne min Bk 1: 102 May 1696 John Moseley had married
administratrix of William Ashwell, dec'd. maybe that's his only wife
Elizabeth? That book ASSERTS an ADDITIONAL WIFE, Dtr of HENRY MOORE, but the
only source cited is above will, and the book confused SON IN LAW Henry with
being a father in law. Princess Anne Deed Bk 05:489, 15 Apr 1739 - 2 Jul 1740
will of #703 John of the parish of Linhaven, Princess Anne Co., no wife
mentioned, but names sons Francis, Anthony, daughter Elen wife of Abia Cox,
daughter Mary now wife of Capt. Henry Moore. Grandsons John Moseley and Jno.
Moore execs Francis Moseley, Anthony Moseley, Henry Moore witnesses Francis
Moseley, Robert Whitehurst.
Children's Birth Dates: FRANCIS'S daughter ELIZABETH SUPPOSEDLY WROTE a
HAYNES BIBLE, found at U of NC-Chapel Hill NC, which says Francis born 1702.
We changed his birth date but left other kids' birth dates as estimated from
public records because authenticity of the bible, while credible, is not
beyond question.
Va Pat bk 10: 209 of 1714 John land Pr. Anne Co adj. Capt Francis Moore's
marsh.
1713 in Perquimans Co NC deed bk "O" John Moseley sold 100 acres he, John,
had acquired Feb 1701. Probably not this John, but no other Moseleys known as
yet in Perquimans Co. NC then, and John b. ca 1670 of Norfolk Va was "Capt".
Order Of Children: the unmarried son John who died by 1725 is listed as
eldest by Blankenship. But by then Francis was married and soon titled "Capt."

Elizabeth Mrs. Ashwell

Adventurers of Purse and Person 1607-1625, 3rd ed. 1987 revised and edited
by Virginia M. Meyer and John Frederick Dorman, p. 319, 702.
The assertion that HER surname was Moore is almost certainly just a confusion
with her daughter, Mary, who married (2) Henry Moore, who was in probate of
Elizabeth's widower John Moseley in Princess Anne Deed Bk 5: 489, 493 in 1740.
Princess Anne deed bk 3: 6 reports Eliz Moseley inventory ordered 4 Mar 1711/2.

Dinah SCOTT

[moseley1.ged]

Our evidence tentatively says a Frances Scott married the one Anthony Moseley
--WHEREAS apparently the other contemporary Anthony Moseley married a Dinah
Scott.  This sounds more likely the result of confusion among the Scott family
and among the two Anthony Moseleys. However can't resolve confusion for now.

John MOSELEY

[moseley1.ged]

Named in his grandfather's will.

Elizabeth MOSELEY

[moseley1.ged]

Named in her grandfather's will (probably Tully emperour 1722).
no marriage known for her, so i include the undocumented speculation that some
