NOTE: Information that I now have indicates that Charles Burke ABERNETHY was probably not the son of Nathan ABERNETHY and Eve CLINE, as local researchers have usually surmised. In fact, Nathan ABERNETHY and Eve CLINE and their fourteen children relocated to Georgia, and none of the local (Gaston and Lincoln Counties, NC) research that I have seen presents this information. For additional information, see Some Abernethy Families.

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/j/o/h/Donna-J-Johnson/BOOK-0001/0004-0024.html#CHILD311Notes for Charles Burke Abernethy: Research has not proven that Charles Burke Abernethy is the son of Nathan Abernethy and Eve Cline.

He is a possible child of Nathan Abernethy and Eve Cline, as was surmised by the separate research efforts of Miss Rozella Abernethy and Rev. Edward Smith. However, the fact that he is buried at the Abernethy family cemetery in Gaston County, NC may lead to the discovery that he is related to the family of James S. Abernethy, buried there. He may also be the son of Nathan Abernethy, youngest son of Robert & Sarah Abernethy, who is buried at MT. Ruhama Church in Catawaba Co., NC. Another idea put forth in 1998 by Rev. Smith is that Charles Burke Abernethy might have been the son of Eli Abernethy, and that James Abernethy who married Ritty Abernethy might have been Burke's brother. Eli Abernethy was a brother of James S. Abernethy, and lived in the area. However, it is unlikely that Eli was the father of Charles Burke Abernathy, since the listing for Eli Abernethy in the 1850 Indiana census includes a son Charles, born in 1837.

Some descendants have spoken of family opposition to the marriage of Charles Burke Abernethy and Sarah Eliza Rankin. Sarah had given birth to two children out of wedlock before she married Charles Burke Abernethy, and she was a few years older than he. Apparently, the name of the father of her children was not disclosed. In addition, an agreement was reached between John Butch Rankin and Charles Burke Abernethy, that he and Sarah would inherit the Rankin land in return for their care of John Rankin in his old age. These may be reasons that Charles Burke Abernethy did not join his parents in Georgia.

Abernethy family cemetery in Gaston Co., NC - on Turner Rd. (S.R. 2005), go .7 mile - site is in large oak grove about 30 yds. off left side of road. Graves of family members, many unmarked.
Large monument in center of plot with the following names on the sides: STONE WITHERSPOON SKIDMORE ABERNETHY Hollie Abernethy, Elizabeth Abernethy, Fannie Abernethy, Martha Abernethy, Margaret Abernethy, James S. Abernethy, Jerry Abernethy, C. Mark Abernethy, George W. Abernethy, Susan Abernethy, Susie Abernethy, Barnette Abernethy, William Abernethy, Miles Abernethy, Daniel L. Abernethy, Etta Skidmore, Manda Skidmore, Burke Abernethy, Tilman Stone, Frances Witherspoon, J. A. Abernethy.

I wanted to reply to your message about the family of Phillip Abernathy. Because your GGGrandmother Minervah Abernathy is an older sister to my GGGrandmother Elizabeth Hortense Abernathy. Looking at printouts from Census Records of 1850 Cass County,Georgia and 1860,1880,and 1900 Montgomery County, Arkansas. I found the children of Phillip Abernathy and Margaret "Peggy" Bates to be:

Canzada Abernathy,Born Mar.1850. Married W.J.Lewis. died 1916.
Columbus C.Abernathy,Born Aug.1853. Married 1)Lizzie Fitzsimmons. 2)Leah E. J. Corley 3)Cora Lee.,
James W. Abernathy, Born 1855 -
Minervah Abernathy, Born 1859 -
Elizabeth Hortensia Abernathy, Born 1862, Married 1) Samuel Enoch Hendrix. 2) James Harrison Edwards., Died 1909.
Phillip R. Abernathy, Born 1865, Married Julia A.Fryar. Died 1940.
Anora Abernathy, Born 1879 -
Spicey C. Abernathy, Born 1880 (Parents are Phillip Abernathy and 2)wife Martha E.Goss).

The children; Elizabeth Hortensia(Artensy), Phillip R.,and Anora are listed in the 1880 Census of Montgomery County, Arkansas,Pg.9, line 62,MT Ida.

I used a book by Vera L.Blake,on the Bates Family for the dates used above. I have visited the grave of Phillip Abernathy in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Big Fork, Arkansas. Most of the people buried there are related to me, directly or by marriage to the Families of (Abernathy,Bates, Goss,Hendrix, and Vandiver). I have some information on Phillip Abernathy and his brother James A. Abernathy who left Georgia in 1852 with the Bates Families in a wagon train to settle in Montgomery County, Arkansas. I know  Phillip was a Blacksmith by trade and worked near an Iron furnace on the Etowah River Georgia, as did his other brothers. They all had come down to Georgia from Lincoln County, North Carolina with their Parents Nathan Abernathy And Eve Cline. I visited Macedonia cemetery in Bartow (formerly Cass) County, Georgia. several of Phillip's brothers are buried there, and I suspect that his parents are buried there also, but over 200 of the graves there are only marked with fieldstone.

I haven't looked at the information on the Abernathy web site at http://parsonstech.com/genealogy/trees/babernat/d223.htm#P321 , but I will compare my notes with what is there. I am willing to share any research I have, and hope that you will respond to my message here, or to my E-mail at alpinemountains@yahoo.com , Daniel Bass
