George BUMGARNER

[CurrentBum2.GED]

Burial: Fairview Memorial Cemetery, Sylva,NC.  While George was serving in
the Civil War, Eliz was afraid that the Union Army would take all of their valuables, and steal their cows, so she sold the cows, and buried
the money. After George's parole from Camp Douglas, a Federal Prison in Illinois, he was involved in a prisoner exchange at City Point,VA in March, 1865, and he walked home from VA. He and Eliz dug up the money;
but, because it was confederate money, it was useless. This story comes
from Federal Records, and also, from Bud Parker and Mrs. Ila Hanson, both great grandchildren of George and Elizabeth Bumgarner. Occupation: Farmer.
