George W. HENDERLITE

1.  From Addendum to Early Settlers of Old Mount Airy, Wythe County, Virginia By Joseph R. Ca meron Sr. and Constance L. Cameron, page 215 states that George was a Treasurer of Smyth Coun ty and ran for Congress against Gen. William Terry. On Firday morning, Jan. 23, 1880, Georg e jumped from the thrid story of the Metropalitan Hotel in Washington D. C.  He was the son o f Benjamin and Catherine (Cullop) Henderlite. Katherine KILLINGER

1.  From Addendum to Early Settlers of Old Mount Airy, Wythe County, Virginia By Joseph R. Ca meron Sr. and Constance L. Cameron, page 215 states that "During Stoneman's Raid on Marion, s he retrived Smyth County's land records from a burning wagon and kept them safely hidden unti l they could be returned to the coiurthouse. The County's gratitude was acknowledged on Jan . 17, 1865, in Court Order book 12, p.499, when the court ordered that she be given $500 rewa rd. It is surmised that this was in Confederate dollars.  After the war, Katherine m. John Ja cob Scherer, b. 1830, d. 1919. Together they founded and developed a school for women, Mario n College in MArion, Virginia. Katherine d. in 1898. 1.  From Addendum to Early Settlers of Old Mount Airy, Wythe County, Virginia By Joseph R. Ca meron Sr. and Constance L. Cameron, page 215 states that "He m. Margaret E. Atkins on Nov. 3 , 1869. George D. H.'s death is recorded in the Smyth Death Register on p. 112. He died 21 Ju l 1896. He may be bur. at Round Hill Cemetery in Marion for I found the following entry in Hi story of Smyth County Birginia, Vol Two, 1832-1870: Ante-bellum Years through the Civil War , p. 226: a person by name of G. D. Hawkins Killinger served in Co. A, 8th Virginia Cavalry , Jenkin's Brigade, "Smyth Dragoons," and was buried at Round Hill.  ( Sources: 1850 Smyth, V A Census: Smyth Mar. Reg. 1, p. 31.)
