Subject: [VAISLEOF-L] Land patent

Hello,
I have an ancestor, George Skipper, probably of Virginia who sold some land in Northampton Co., NC.  It was from a land patent he received in 1668 !! He sold the land to Edward Goodson. Here is a copy of the transaction.  I am trying to find George Skipper.  The only other document with his name on it is one of the Chief man of the Nottoway Indians. What were people receiving land patents for in 1668?  Is this the same as a grant or just the name of what someone had bought?

pg. 358 EDWARD GOODSON of Northampton Co. to JAMES TURNER of Isle of Wight Co., Va. 23 Nov. 1748 - 7 pounds Va. money 400 acres more or less on the south side of Potacasa swamp, joining the mouth of the Spring branch and the swamp, part of a patent to GEORGE SKIPPER 1 May 1668, all houses, orchards, gardens, fences etc. Wit: JOHN SIMPSON, NICHOLAS MONGER Reg. Northampton Co. Nov. Ct. 1748 J. Edwards C. Ct.

The name of the book is something about NC Will Abstracts.  I will have to find that. It was accidentally deleted recently.
Joy Skipper Cornwell

I am researching my Abernathy ancestors. Martha Ann Abernathy b.5-18-1833in Lincoln, NC d. 7-15-1907 in Humphreys Co., TN married William Cochran(who died during civil war; he was in the U.S.A. not C.S.A), he is buried in the National Cemetery in Nashville, Tn. She then married James Edward Wanamaker b.4-15-1830 d.2-13-1892. Her father was Valentine Abernathy b. in NC who was supposedly full blooded Cherokee. Her mother was Elisabeth Coldwell b. in NC Any information at all on Valentine Abernathy will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Adam Alexander ABERNATHY

probably not other Alexander Abernathy married to Nancy - large difference in possible age - some trees report Adam as husband of Mary Catherine Summit, born 1833.  He would have been almost 30 years younger, and Mary Summit was Rhoda Cline's mother (his mother-in-law)
