Coleman H. ABERNATHY


Made their home on a farm where the town of Lowell, NC, is today. Lived there until 1869 when he was discouraged about "Carpetbagger and Negro rule". He sold out and started out for IN on3 Mar 1869. Reached son John's place on 5 Apr 1869 in Morgan Co, IN. Bought farm there and was not satisfied and in Aug sold crop standing in field and returned to NC. They settled near their old home.

John D. ABERNATHY

Will of John D. Abernathy reads:

In the name of God, Amen, I, John D. Abernathy, of the county of Lincoln, State of North Carolina, being weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, blest be to God, do make this my last will and testament.

First, - I will and bequeath to my beloved wife, Susannah, during her lifetime, my home tract of land and my Kinder tract of land, both of which are known from names of reputation. Also for her lifetime the following negroes viz; Tom, Mary, Celia, Martha. I will and bequeath to my wife, Susannah, all my household and kitchen furniture to be hers forever. I also will and bequeath unto her during her lifetime all my horses, cattle, sheep and hogs, and all the provisions that may be on hand at my decease.

I will and bequeath unto my daughter, Charity Young, one negro girl named Sarah.

I will and bequeath unto my daughter, Fanny Gabriel, one negro girl named Rhody.

I will and bequeath unto my daughter, Polly Duncan, one negro girl named Molly and after her decease to be divided among her children equally with her increase.

I will and bequeath unto my daughter, Nancy Rozelle, four hundred dollars to be paid after my wife's decease.

I will and bequeath unto my daughter, Elizabeth McCorkle, one negro girl named Fanny.

I will and bequeath unto my son, Jacob, one negro boy named Alex.

I will and bequeath unto my son, William, one negro boy named Timothy.

I will and bequeath unto my son, Miles, one negro girl named Franky.

I will and bequeath unto my son, Franklin, one negro boy named Ephraim.

I will and bequeath unto my son, John, one negro boy named Frisman.

I will and bequeath unto my daughter, Susan Hoke, one negro girl named Sukey.

I further will and bequeath unto my sons, Franklin and John, after the decease of my wife, the home tract of land, and Kinder tract and Mountain tract of land to be theirs forever.

I further will to my son Franklin at his mother's death, one negro girl Mary a forenamed and her youngest child.

And I further will to my son, John, at the decease of his mother, a negro woman named Martha and the youngest child she may have at my wife's death. I further will and bequeath to my sons, Franklin and John, one negro boy named Tom to be equal between them.

My further will is that all my negroes not divided at the decease of my wife, be put up to the highest bidder AMONG MY CHILDREN, the condition of same at the discretion of my executors and the proceeds of said sale to be divided among all my children equally.

I further will that my negro woman, Celia, at my wife's decease, to go to any of my children she may wish to live with to be theirs forever.

I hereby revoke and renounce all other wills made by me.

I hereby nominate my sons, William and Franklin, my exectuors of my last will and testament.

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this eight day of January 1838.
